New CMS Conditions for Coverage require ambulatory surgical centers to establish a fully integrated infection control program that is directed by a health professional with training or knowledge in infection control. This course is designed to provide a thorough introduction to the basic principles of infection control as they pertain to ambulatory surgical settings. This information is intended to equip the designated infection control professional with the knowledge required to ensure a successful infection prevention program that is compliant with CMS regulations.

In addition to the course work, participants will be provided with reference material and links to all nationally recognized infection control guidelines and recommendations which are essential to achieve CMS compliance and foster the development of effective infection control policies and procedures in the ambulatory surgical setting.
The course work was authored by Regina Napolitano, RN, MA, CIC, an Infection Control Practitioner whose credentials include over ten years of hospital infection control experience at a large, municipal health facility; five years of experience as a consultant for federally-funded international programs; and five years as a college professor providing instruction in epidemiology and community health. Ms. Napolitano is also an approved provider of mandatory infection control training for licensed health professionals in New York State.
This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, Inc., an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Purpose/ Goal Of This Activity:
CMS requires that ambulatory surgical centers possess a fully integrated infection control program that is directed by a health professional with training in infection control. This program will provide the foundation principles of infection control in ambulatory surgical setting. Upon completion, the RN will be able to manage an infection control program that will maintain compliance with CMS standards in this setting.

As you read through the material on the course pages, you will be occasionally prompted to answer exam questions. There is a total of 40 multiple choice questions in this course. You must achieve a grade of 80% (32 correct answers) to become certified.
When you have answered the last exam question, the Course Results page will display. This page will contain your final grade and allow you to immediately print your certificate if you have scored a minimum grade of 80%. Your certificate will also be available on your Control Panel where you may print it at any time.
Course work does not need to be completed in one online session. You can log off at any point and return to the course at your convenience.
The Course Reference Page available at the completion of the course will contain many useful reference documents from notable sources pertinent to material covered in this course. Links to all nationally recognized guidelines and recommendations necessary to serve as the basis for development of policies and procedures in the ambulatory surgical setting (as required by CMS) will be available on that page at all times following successful completion of the course.
